German Federico G. Honigmann and Mount Turcia… this mount was most likely reminiscent of the heights of
the eagles’nests in his native homeland. The house he built overlooking Lake Barcena can be considered one of the most beautiful scenic landscapes in El Bierzo. It also has a challenging view of Mt. Anguilianos
hiding the medieval traditions of its hermits
in recluse in the “Valle del Silencio” and the esclesiastical power
that surrounding villages San Pedro de
Montes and Peñalba enjoyed at one time. Golden dusks tainted by the gold and red cooper clay colour of the soil mined
by the Romans in “Las Medulas”
How the Empire shone mining this mineral
under the nocturnal peacefulness of the sky full of bright, clean stars
on a Summer Solstice night.
Hidden amongst the maternal mists of the “Bierzo’s” golden autumns. Prostrated on the snows and scented by chestnuts roasting on embers of oak,
lit in winter fires. Looking over a valley filled with the delicate native “Mencia” and “Godello” grape
with its aromatic peach and chamomille fragrance
which naturally accompany the powerful tastes of local game meat. Then enhanced by the amazing array of homegrown vegetables
produced by gardens everywhere in this land blessed by a microclimate.
The house fans out giving a very wide view of all the spectacular vistas of this amazing land.
It’s terraced hills, generous vegetable gardens and orchards filled with Madrone trees, Yews and Holm oaks.
It is also home to the magnetita mineral, the sturdy wolfram and the Bierzo’s reknowned anthracite
which have been historically mined from the veins of this land.
Its peculiar black slate covering the roofs of churches and palaces
all around Europe for centuries. So clearly we have turned this exceptional place into a unique experience
for travellers looking for something out of the ordinary.
We have thought of travellers like you.
