Hiking at the foot of the hotel
In this region a cork oak is called Zofreiro (or Zufreiro). Thus, a zofreral is a cork oak plantation. In this route, we will walk along beautiful cork oak trees or zofrerales in Cobrana, passing through lovely places which, some of them, offer fantastic views. And not just that, also from a botanist point of view. It constitutes a very interesting route since we can immerse ourselves in a forest with not only Mediterranean characteristics but also Atlantic touches where the chestnut trees, cork oak trees, and madrone trees are the protagonists.
The itinerary of this route is triple. There are several possibilities for a hiker and this is a great success. Thus, the less skilful in doing big efforts in the nature could choose shorter route and at least get the idea of what is the Zofreral of Cobrana.
In the meantime, better walkers can enjoy a longer route and even extend it a little bit to climb the Alto de los Navallos.

Visit a wine cellar with wine tasting
There was a time, 15 years ago approximately, when people said that wines from El Bierzo were the perfect red wines during the summer. The grape, the Mencía, from which the wine was made, was thought to be too poor, of low quality and with a fresh sourness. Moreover, it was at a time, when foreign varieties were overvalued, when all over the world people told about the virtues of the cabernet sauvignon and the merlot. Nowadays, the majority of the assertions are proved to be false.
With the Designation of Origin, a new generation of very young wine-producers began to work, they left out the Mencía, which grew vigorous in the fertile valley of the Sil River, and looked for the one in the tough mountains of the wide valley Bercianese. Grapevine growing in elevation needed little water; it was strong, had low production and gave unknown grapes until then, with breeding resistance and an extraordinary evolution.
That finished at a stroke with the myth that the Mencía was slightly weak, to finally establish that it is one of the best Spanish varieties. The prestige is growing day by day and, especially now since the foreign varieties tire increasingly and everybody looks toward the native ones.
In summer, the same as for the rest of the seasons, if it is possible, if the range of Spanish wines are considered a Mediterranean climatic influence, the ones from El Bierzo -and some areas from the North of Navarra- are the unique having Atlantic influence. This produces a fresher and more balance sourness.
